Galerías Pacífico

Address Florida y Córdoba, Microcentro

A shopping gallery from 1889 that is one of the finest examples of commercial architecture in Buenos Aires. The building was originally designed as a replica of the Bon Marché in Paris; it was later converted into a gallery with a glass-domed central hall and five ornate interior passageways. The ceiling frescoes in the dome — painted by a group of Argentine muralists in 1945, including Antonio Berni — are the most significant element: large allegorical panels that feel out of place above a shopping centre and are the better for it.

The shopping itself is standard upscale retail; the architecture is the reason to visit. The dome can be seen from the street-level entrance on Florida; go up to the balcony level for the best angle on the frescoes.
