Plaza de Mayo

Argentina's political heart, flanked by the pink Casa Rosada

The political heart of Argentina since 1580 — the square named for the May Revolution of 1810 and the focal point of every national drama since. The pink Casa Rosada (presidential palace) sits on the east side; the Cabildo (colonial town hall) and the Metropolitan Cathedral face it. Every Thursday at 15:30 the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo still circle the central obelisk wearing their white headscarves, asking what happened to their children during the dictatorship of 1976–83.
