Puerto Madero

The former industrial docklands east of the Microcentro, redeveloped since the 1990s into a neighbourhood of renovated red-brick warehouses, glass towers, footbridges, and riverside restaurants. Puerto Madero is expensive and a little sterile — the dining scene tends toward expense-account steak houses and the hotels toward international business chains — but it has good views back toward the city skyline and some worthwhile architecture.

The Puente de la Mujer (Bridge of the Woman), designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2001, is the neighbourhood's landmark. The ecological reserve immediately south, the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur, is the most wildlife-rich space in central Buenos Aires — over 300 bird species have been recorded, and at weekends it fills with porteños cycling, walking, and birdwatching.
