A 170-metre pedestrian bridge over the docks in Puerto Madero, designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2001. The bridge's single white pylon and cable-stay structure give it a distinctive silhouette; it can rotate 90 degrees to allow boats through the dock entrance.
The bridge is one of several Calatrava designs that treat structural engineering as sculpture. In this case the design works better from a distance than close up — the view from the far side of the dock, looking back toward the city, gives the best sense of the composition. Puerto Madero is a short walk from the centre; the bridge makes a good reason to come.
