One of the most famous cemeteries in the world, and a genuinely extraordinary place to spend an hour or two. The Recoleta Cemetery is a city within a city: 14 hectares of marble mausoleums, ornate sculpture, and narrow alleyways laid out on a grid, with the tombs of presidents, generals, scientists, and socialites arranged in neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles.
The architecture ranges from the modest to the grandiose. The tomb of Rufina Cambacérès — a young woman buried alive in 1902 according to local legend — features a lifelike marble figure of the girl trying to push open the door from inside. Maps available at the entrance mark the locations of notable tombs; the guides at the gate (licensed, unofficial) can save time. Open daily; free entry.
