The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Salta (MACS) occupies a restored colonial building near the main plaza and displays works by contemporary Argentine and international artists. The museum has a particular focus on artists from the north-west region, many of whom work with themes drawn from Andean culture and landscape.
The collection rotates regularly, so what you see depends on when you visit. It is a small museum but an interesting one, especially for contemporary work that engages seriously with the visual traditions of the region rather than importing metropolitan tastes wholesale. Admission is free or nominal and it makes a good break from the colonial-era architecture and religious sites that dominate the centre.
