Salta is the base for almost everything in the Norte, and its agencies all sell some version of the same three day trips: south through the Quebrada de las Conchas to Cafayate, west over the Cuesta del Obispo to Cachi, and north-west up to the Salinas Grandes salt flat at 4,100 metres. They differ in group size, vehicle and how much the guide knows. Rafting on the Río Juramento, a couple of hours south, is the main thing to do that is not a drive.
