The Convento de San Bernardo sits at the top of Caseros, at the edge of the colonial centre below Cerro San Bernardo. It is the oldest surviving religious building in Salta, with parts dating to the early 17th century, though most of what you see today is from the 18th century. The convent is a working Carmelite monastery, so the interior is not open to visitors.
What draws visitors here is the exterior: the carved sandstone portal and, especially, the extraordinary carved wooden door from 1762, a masterpiece of colonial-era craftsmanship. The carving combines Christian symbols with botanical motifs in a way that is unmistakably Andean. Even a brief stop to examine it is worthwhile.
