Cerro San Bernardo

The hill overlooking Salta's colonial centre rises to around 1,450 metres and offers the best views of the city and the surrounding Lerma Valley. You can reach the top by cable car (teleférico) from the station at Parque San Martín, or on foot via a steep staircase of 1,070 steps that climbs through the wooded hillside — most people go up by cable car and walk down, or vice versa.

At the summit there are gardens, a café with good views, and a small amphitheatre. The panorama takes in the entire colonial centre, the red-tiled roofs, and the mountains beyond. The cable car runs daily and is not expensive. The walk down through the park takes around 45 minutes and passes the small Camino del Peregrino shrines.
