Cathedral Basilica of Mar del Plata

The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Cecilia stands in the pedestrianised centre of Mar del Plata, two blocks from the main square. The building is in neo-Romanesque style, with twin towers and a rose window over the main entrance. Inside, the nave is long and well-proportioned, with good stained glass and a calm that contrasts pleasantly with the busy city outside.

The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Mar del Plata and is open daily. The pedestrian precinct around it, including the Plaza San Martín, is the city's main gathering place on weekday mornings and evenings.

A story
The cathedral took over 30 years to build, from 1905 to 1938, which is why the style is a mixture of late Romanesque at the base and more elaborate neo-Gothic in the upper levels and towers. One bell tower was completed in the 1930s; the second wasn't finished until the 1970s. From the outside, the asymmetry is still faintly visible to an attentive eye.
