Mar del Plata has more to offer than its beaches. The city has a lively fishing port, several museums worth an afternoon, fine early 20th-century architecture in the centre, and one of Argentina's biggest casinos. In January and February the population swells as Buenos Aires essentially empties to the coast; outside those months the city is quieter but still has enough going on to reward a visit.
