Piedra Movediza

Hilltop park with a replica of Tandil's beloved balancing boulder

The Piedra Movediza — the "moving stone" — is Tandil's defining landmark, and the hill park that bears its name is the first place most visitors head. The original granite boulder, which balanced improbably on the hilltop and rocked visibly in strong winds, fell in 1912; the replica installed in 2007 faithfully recreates the shape but is, predictably, bolted down. The site is worth visiting regardless: the hilltop gives panoramic views over the city and the surrounding pampa, and the approach through the park is a pleasant walk. There are picnic areas and a small café at the base.

A story
The original Piedra Movediza was a large granite boulder that balanced on the hilltop for centuries, rocking in the wind, until it tumbled on February 29, 1912. The exact cause was debated for decades — earthquake tremors? heavy rains? — and the fall was mourned by Tandileños as a civic loss. A replica was finally installed in 2007, recreating the silhouette that the city had grown up looking at from below.
