Vía Crucis and Calvary Hill

Hillside Stations of the Cross, site of the annual Easter Passion Play

The hillside above the city carries a monumental Stations of the Cross — fourteen large sculptural groupings climbing the rocky slope to a crucifixion scene at the summit. It's a striking site at any time of year: the scale is large enough to feel genuinely dramatic, and the views back over the city are good. During Holy Week it becomes one of the more remarkable religious spectacles in Argentina, when the Passion Play is staged here across several evenings, culminating on Good Friday night with a cast of hundreds of local volunteers and an audience of tens of thousands. Even if you are visiting outside Easter, the walk up the stations is worthwhile.

A story
The Tandil Easter Passion Play, staged on this hillside since 1979, draws up to 30,000 spectators on Good Friday night. It is performed entirely by local volunteers — the same families often holding the same roles across generations — and the competition for parts, including the centurions, Pontius Pilate, and the condemned, is fierce. The performance runs for several hours in the dark, torchlit and largely silent from the crowd.
