Lago Huechulafquen

Lago Huechulafquen is the largest lake in Lanín National Park and one of the most beautiful in Argentine Patagonia — a 70-kilometre stretch of blue water backed by araucaria forests and overlooked at the western end by the cone of Lanín volcano. The lake is about 25 kilometres from Junín de los Andes along a good road, which continues along the northern shore to the park's interior.

The lakeshore has several campgrounds and picnic areas, and the fishing is excellent — Huechulafquen feeds the Chimehuin River at its eastern end and holds large populations of brown and rainbow trout. Several fishing lodges operate on the shores.

The drive from Junín to the lake and back makes a good half-day trip even without fishing or hiking. The views of Lanín from the road as it rounds the lake's curves are among the best in the national park, and the araucaria forest along the upper road is particularly impressive in early morning or late afternoon light.
