La Cancha Market

La Cancha is one of the largest open-air markets in South America — a sprawling, dense, chaotic market that occupies a large chunk of Cochabamba's southern centre. It sells everything: fruit, vegetables, raw meat, electronics, fabric, clothing, tools, herbs, and cooking equipment. The organised chaos is part of the attraction, and the food stalls along the outer edges offer some of the best cheap eating in the city.

Go on a Wednesday or Saturday for the busiest atmosphere. Bring small bills and keep your wallet secure — the market is crowded enough for pickpockets to work. The area around Avenida Oquendo and Calle 1 de Mayo is the main hub. Budget two or three hours if you want to properly explore it.

A story
La Cancha operates on a different scale from most South American markets. Originally a peripheral trading post for produce from the surrounding valley, it has expanded to occupy roughly 15 city blocks, spreading across streets and into surrounding buildings until it effectively absorbs everything around it on market days. Wednesday and Saturday are the biggest days, drawing vendors and buyers from throughout the Cochabamba department.
