Cloudforest mountain hike with views above the clouds

The 2,500-metre mountain that Coroico is built on. Above 2,100 metres it is a nature reserve, mostly covered in cloudforest rich with orchids.

The classic hike is the three-hour climb to the summit — though "summit" is slightly misleading, as the mountaintop ridge stretches about 15 kilometres and the highest point is at the far end. The forest on top is beautiful, and on clear days the views justify the effort. Much of the lower climb is exposed to sun, so bring protection. On cloudy days you may find yourself walking through the clouds or even above them. Near the top the path splits: right leads to an Aymara ritual site dedicated to Pacha Mama; left continues through cloudforest for at least two more hours.

Hotel La Finca, half an hour by minibus toward Carmen Pampa, makes a good base for walks in the Uchumachi forest.
