When to Go

Tarija has an agreeable climate year-round — warm days, cool nights, and far less rain than the Yungas or the Amazon basin. The dry season (April–October) is the most comfortable time to visit: clear skies, pleasant temperatures in the low 20s Celsius, and good conditions for wine tourism in the valley.

The wet season (November–March) brings afternoon rains that can be heavy, occasionally causing flooding on the roads to the valley wineries. The city stays functional and the rains usually stop by late afternoon. Prices are lower and the city is less visited during this period.

Tarija's festivals are worth planning around. Carnaval in February is celebrated with more enthusiasm here than almost anywhere in Bolivia — the city has a tradition of music, dance, and processions that draws visitors from across the country. The Fiesta de San Roque (mid-August) is another significant celebration. La Vendimia (grape harvest festival) takes place in March and includes tastings, processions, and events at the valley wineries.
