Barra do Garças sits where the Garças River meets the Araguaia, on the Mato Grosso side of the border with Goiás. It has the practical feel of a regional city, but the setting is the point: cerrado hills rise behind town, river beaches appear in the dry season, and waterfalls cut through Serra Azul State Park.
The place also has a strange sense of humour. Local UFO lore has become part of the tourist identity, complete with a Discoporto in the hills above town. It is easy to roll your eyes, but the mix of hot springs, river life, cerrado trails, and Roswell-style oddity gives Barra do Garças a personality of its own.
It is not a polished resort town. Come with a car, plan around the heat, and use it as a low-key base for Serra Azul, the Araguaia waterfront, and the wilder Serra do Roncador country beyond.
