Cuiabá punches above its weight as a stopover. Most visitors are in transit to the Pantanal or Chapada dos Guimarães, but the city has real attractions in its own right: a good cluster of colonial churches, a genuinely fascinating indigenous museum, and the quirky distinction of sitting almost exactly at the geodetic centre of South America. The old centre around the Praça da República is compact and walkable.
