Canoa Quebrada is a small beach village in Ceara, about 160 km southeast of Fortaleza. It sits below red sandstone cliffs, with dunes behind town and a long, windy beach in front. The old hippie reputation is still part of the story, even though Canoa is now firmly on the northeast Brazil beach circuit.
The place works best if you want a day built around sand, wind, and sunset. Walk the beach in the morning, take a jangada out from the shore, or use the cliffs and dunes for buggy rides and paragliding. The light is best late in the day, when the beach falls into shade and the dunes above town start to glow.
Canoa is not a quiet fishing village anymore, and the main street can turn into a weekend party strip. Still, the setting is strong enough to carry it. Come for the cliffs, the wide beach, and the sense that the village is balanced between old jangada life and a much louder resort future.
