Getting There

Getting to Jericoacoara requires effort, which is part of what keeps it what it is. The nearest commercial airport is in Jijoca de Jericoacoara, a small airstrip that opened in 2016 and handles connections from São Paulo, Fortaleza, and a handful of other Brazilian cities via Azul and GOL airlines. From Jijoca, a 4x4 taxi or dune buggy over sandy tracks completes the journey — about 30 minutes. There are no normal roads into the village from this direction.

From Fortaleza — the state capital, about 300 kilometres east — the most common approach is an overnight bus to Jijoca or to Camocim (the nearest sizeable town), followed by a buggy or 4x4 transfer through the dunes. The journey from Fortaleza takes roughly six hours total. Some travellers also come by boat from Camocim to the west, landing on the beach itself.

No private cars enter the village; inside Jeri, everything moves on foot, horse, or donkey. Buggies and 4x4s operate as taxis for excursions to the lagoons and nearby beaches, bookable from any guesthouse.
