Kitesurfing is the defining activity of Jericoacoara's wind season from August to January. The steady northeast trade winds that blow across this part of the Ceará coast produce conditions that are genuinely world-class — consistent, powerful, and reliable — and the geography adds flat-water lagoons for beginners within easy reach of wave riding on the open beach. The kite schools along the main beach run courses from complete beginners to advanced technique.
Several international freestyle and wave competitions are held at Jeri during the season, which adds a spectator dimension to beach time: watching expert riders launch off waves and perform aerial tricks is entertaining even for non-participants. Windsurfers are less numerous than kiters but equally visible; rental and instruction is available for both. Outside the wind season (roughly February to July) the sea calms considerably, the wind drops, and the beach shifts to a more relaxed swimming-and-sunbathing mode.
