A small star-shaped fort at the northern tip of Recife Antigo, originally built by the Dutch in the 1620s and reworked by the Portuguese after the reconquest. It now houses a modest army museum with weapons, uniforms, and material from Pernambuco's military history.
The fort itself is more interesting than the displays. The compact ramparts give a sense of how exposed the colony was to attack from the sea, and the walk up to the walls passes some of the oldest stonework in the city.
