Marco Zero

The symbolic kilometre zero of Recife, a plaza at the tip of Recife Antigo where the Capibaribe river slides into the Atlantic. A large compass rose in coloured stone marks the spot, with the colonial waterfront buildings of Rua Bom Jesus on one side and the open harbour on the other.

At weekends the square fills up with food stalls, street performers, and small craft boats running visitors out to the Parque das Esculturas in the reef. After dark it becomes one of the main carnival staging points and a regular venue for free outdoor concerts.

A story
The compass rose in the centre of the square marks the symbolic founding point of the city, and the offshore sculpture park by Francisco Brennand sits on top of one of the natural reefs that gave Recife its name. Boats leave from the steps to take you out among the ceramic towers.
