The Mercado Modelo is the main souvenir market of Salvador, set in a long arcaded building on the lower-city waterfront. The 250-odd stalls sell capoeira instruments (the bow-shaped berimbau), Bahian lacework, leather goods, the standard tourist art, and Candomblé religious supplies. Bargaining is expected; prices halve with the first counter-offer.
The building's earlier role as a customs house and processing point for enslaved Africans is documented inside but not made central. Above the market, two of Salvador's better casual restaurants serve moqueca at lakeside tables.
