Salvador's highlights are concentrated in two areas: the Pelourinho in the upper city, with its baroque churches and colonial streets, and the lower city on the bay, anchored by the Mercado Modelo. For most visitors, a walking loop of the Pelourinho — Largo do Pelourinho, the São Francisco church, the Jorge Amado museum, and the Afro-Brazilian museum — is the essential half-day. Add the Farol da Barra at the western entrance to the bay for sunset, the Lacerda Elevator for the ride down to the lower city, and a candomblé ceremony if you can find one. Capoeira rodas happen spontaneously in the Terreiro de Jesus most evenings.
