The square at the northern end of the Pelourinho, just beyond the Igreja do Carmo, with the small Forte de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo as its centrepiece. The fort itself is now a capoeira school and martial-arts museum; the square is one of the prettiest in the upper city and the calmest after dark.
A handful of small pousadas around the square make it the most pleasant place to stay in the Pelourinho area for travellers who want the historic streets without the late-night noise.
