Lagoa do Abaeté

Black-water lagoon ringed by white-sand dunes

A freshwater lagoon a few hundred metres back from Itapuã beach, with deep tannin-black water and a ring of brilliant white sand dunes. The contrast is striking and the lagoon is locally sacred. Bathing has been restricted in recent decades for conservation reasons, but the surrounding park is still one of the more unusual landscapes in greater Salvador.

A standard half-day combination with Itapuã beach, easily reached by bus from the centre. Avoid the dunes after dark.

A story
The Lagoa is fed by an aquifer of rainwater filtered through peat, which gives it the deep tannin-black colour. Local legend says Iemanjá visits it on full-moon nights to wash her hair — the lagoon's reflection is said to be one of her mirrors.
