Janauari Ecological Park

Flooded-forest reserve near the Meeting of the Waters

The Parque Ecológico do Janauari is the closest piece of proper igapó (flooded forest) to the city — a 9,000-hectare reserve about 15 km south of the centre, on the southern bank of the Rio Negro near the Meeting of the Waters. Most jungle day-tours include a stop here, either by motorised canoe through narrow channels at high water or on a wooden boardwalk over the flood plain.

The park is also the easiest place to see the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies — leaves up to two metres across, with white flowers that bloom for two nights and then turn pink. Pink river dolphins (botos) are sometimes seen in the channels. The park has a floating restaurant where most tours stop for lunch.
