Shopping

Manaus is a free-trade zone (Zona Franca), and electronics, perfume, and imported goods are noticeably cheaper than in the rest of Brazil — many southern Brazilians fly in just to shop. The big air-conditioned malls cluster along Avenida Djalma Batista in the centre-south of the city, with Amazonas Shopping the largest and busiest. For something more characterful, the dense grid of streets around the Mercado Municipal and Rua Marechal Deodoro is the everyday commercial heart of the city — cheap clothes, hammocks, Amazonian fruits, hardware, and stalls of dried herbs and remedies from the forest.
