The Teatro Augusta is a small independent theatre complex on Rua Augusta, in the thick of the Consolação nightlife strip. With a couple of stages and a bar, it has become one of the anchors of São Paulo's alternative and fringe theatre scene, programming new Brazilian drama, dance, stand-up, and late-night performance, often at low ticket prices.
It is the kind of place that captures the character of Baixo Augusta — scrappy, young, and creative — and a good way to spend the early part of an evening before the surrounding bars fill up. Check the listings; programming changes weekly and much of it is in Portuguese, but the physical and visual work travels well across the language barrier.
