Museu do Ipiranga

Neoclassical independence museum in Versailles-style gardens, reopened 2022.

A monumental neoclassical museum set in formal gardens on the spot where Dom Pedro I declared Brazilian independence from Portugal in 1822. The museum closed for a long renovation and reopened in 2022 for the bicentennial of independence, with a modernised exhibition on Brazilian history. The gardens, modelled on Versailles, are free to walk and a favourite São Paulo wedding backdrop.
