João Fernandes Beach

João Fernandes is Búzios's social beach — the one with the most activity, the most people, and the best infrastructure. The water is calm, clear, and sheltered from the open Atlantic swell, making it reliable for swimming and decent for snorkelling around the rocks at each end.

The beach faces east and catches morning sun first. A row of colourful wooden fishing boats is usually pulled up at the southern end, and the combination of boats, clear water, and forested headlands makes it photogenic as well as pleasant to swim in. Vendors circulate with cold drinks and food.

Chairs and umbrellas are available from the beach barracas (stalls) for a modest daily fee. The barracas also serve cold beer, caipirinhas, and simple snacks. Water sports equipment — kayaks, paddleboards — can be rented here.

A story
The fishing boats you see hauled up on João Fernandes are still working vessels. Local fishermen have maintained their operations here despite the resort development around them, and much of the seafood sold in Búzios's restaurants was caught just offshore from this beach.
