The peninsula has more than twenty beaches. They divide roughly into the calmer waters on the eastern and northern sides, where the bay provides shelter and the swimming is gentle, and the Atlantic-facing beaches on the south coast, where waves roll in from open ocean and surf conditions can be serious. Most visitors end up with strong opinions about which beach is best.
