Diamantina's old centre is small and walkable — most of the baroque churches and colonial mansions are within ten minutes of each other. The streets are steep, the stone is old, and the colour of the painted facades changes with the light. For outdoor escapes, the Caminho dos Escravos trail and the ruined village of Biribiri are within half a day of town.
