When to Go

Diamantina sits at 1,100 metres in the Serra do Espinhaço, which gives it a milder climate than much of Minas Gerais. The rainy season runs from November to March — heavy afternoon showers are common, and the Caminho dos Escravos trail can become slippery. The dry season from April to October is the more comfortable time to visit, with clear skies and cooler temperatures.

Serenatas happen on Saturday nights year-round: musicians play in the streets of the old town and a crowd follows them through the alleys. It is informal, lively, and one of the more authentic traditions still functioning in any Brazilian colonial town.

Vesperata is a larger concert series, held on select Saturday evenings from April to October. Musicians play from the balconies of buildings around Praça JK while the crowd watches from below. Dates are fixed well in advance and the event draws visitors from across Minas Gerais — if you are in Diamantina on a Vesperata night, plan your dinner around it. Check the Prefeitura website for the current season's dates.

Carnaval in Diamantina (February or March) is lively and very local — smaller than the major city celebrations but with the same energy, concentrated into a compact historic centre where the noise bounces off stone walls.
