Luminárias

Small southern Minas Gerais town surrounded by quartzite caves, waterfalls, and mountain trails.

Luminarias is a small town in southern Minas Gerais, set among quartzite hills, caves, waterfalls, and quiet rural roads. It is the kind of place that makes sense if you are already exploring the inland mountains between Lavras, Carrancas, and Sao Thome das Letras and want a less polished nature base.

The town itself is simple, but the countryside around it is the point. Trails lead to the Serra Grande area, Pico do Gaviao, rocky caves, and waterfalls such as Pedra Furada and Mandembe. The landscape is dry, stony, and open in places, with clear pools and rough tracks that reward slow travel.

Do not expect big-city infrastructure or a packaged resort. Luminarias is better for travellers with a car, walking shoes, and patience for local directions. If that sounds appealing, it has enough water, rock, and mountain views to justify a day rather than just passing through.
