The Região Oceânica on Niterói's south side has some of the best beaches near Rio de Janeiro. Unlike Copacabana and Ipanema, these are open Atlantic beaches backed by lagoons and green hills rather than apartment towers. The four main beaches — Piratininga, Camboinhas, Itaipu, and Itacoatiara — run roughly west to east, each separated by rocky headlands.
