Chocolates Garoto Factory

Chocolates Garoto has been making chocolate in Vila Velha since 1929, and the company's factory and museum sit in the western part of the city. The brand is one of the most beloved in Brazil — a slice of genuine national food culture. The factory tour (when available) takes you through the production process and ends, inevitably, at a shop where you can buy Garoto products at good prices.

Even if the factory tour isn't running, the small Garoto museum tells the brand's history through packaging, advertising, and equipment from nearly a century of chocolate making. It's a pleasant couple of hours, particularly if you're travelling with children or are the kind of person who finds industrial history charming.

A story
Garoto was founded in 1929 by two German immigrants and grew into one of Brazil's largest chocolate companies. The brand name means "boy" in Portuguese, and the logo — a curly-haired child eating chocolate — has been a constant presence on Brazilian supermarket shelves for nearly a century. Nestlé acquired Garoto in 2002 in a deal that Brazilian antitrust authorities tried to block for 17 years before eventually approving it.
