The most rewarding day trip from Blumenau is Pomerode, about 30 km to the north. Pomerode claims to be the most German city in Brazil — a place where Pomeranian German is still spoken in the streets and where the beer gardens and timber-framed farmhouses look as if they have barely changed since the 19th century. It is smaller and quieter than Blumenau and gives a more authentic sense of what the original German colonist communities looked like.
