Museu da Cerveja

The Beer Museum on Rua XV de Novembro tells the history of brewing in Blumenau from the first German settlers through the industrial era and into the current craft beer renaissance. The exhibits are compact and well-designed, covering the technology of brewing, the social history of beer halls in immigrant communities, and the story of how Oktoberfest grew from a small local celebration into an international event.

The museum shop sells bottled examples from local craft breweries. Admission is cheap. A visit here pairs well with a stop at one of the functioning breweries in the city, of which there are several.

A story
Brazil's beer culture is not generally associated with quality — the dominant beers are mass-produced lagers served ice-cold. Blumenau is the exception. The museum documents how German immigrants brought brewing traditions to the valley in the 1850s and never let them go, creating a craft beer scene decades before the rest of Brazil caught on. Several of the brewery brands featured in the museum are still operating in the city today.
