Bosque Alemão

The Bosque Alemão (German Wood) is a forested park in the northern part of the city, built to honour Curitiba's German immigrant community. Araucária pine trees — the native species of the Paraná plateau, now increasingly rare in the wild — dominate the canopy, and trails wind through the forest past sculptures, a replica of a German immigrant house, and a small Japanese garden tucked into one corner.

The centrepiece is a tower shaped like a Rapunzel-style fairy tale turret, containing a free gallery of fairy tale illustrations by German artist Ida Bohatta Morpurgo. The park is genuinely pleasant to walk through — quiet, shaded, with birdsong — and the combination of forest, folklore, and multicultural history is distinctly Curitiban. A small café operates near the entrance.

A story
Hidden inside the Bosque Alemão is a small Japanese garden with a pond, stone lanterns, and a tea house — a gift from Curitiba's Japanese community. That a German-themed park contains a Japanese garden feels very Curitiba: the city's immigrant communities have all left their mark in distinct parks and monuments, and the overlaps are occasionally surprising.
