Getting Around

Curitiba's bus rapid transit (BRT) system, designed in the 1970s under Mayor Jaime Lerner, was the first of its kind in the world and remains one of the best. The famous tube-shaped boarding stations (tubos) allow passengers to board at platform level, speeding up loading and unloading. The system covers most of the city and is cheap, frequent, and generally reliable.

For visitors, the main lines useful are the circular inter-neighbourhood routes and the express lines along the main axes. A single fare covers transfers across the system. The city centre is compact enough to walk around comfortably, and the key sights — Largo da Ordem, Teatro Guaíra, the Rua das Flores pedestrian street — are all within 15 minutes on foot of each other.

Taxis and app-based rides (Uber is widely available) are necessary for some of the parks and outlying neighbourhoods like Santa Felicidade. The Botanical Garden is served by a dedicated tourist bus, the Linha Turismo, which also stops at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, the Bosque Alemão, and other main attractions on a loop service.
