Ópera de Arame

The Ópera de Arame (Wire Opera House) is one of the more striking buildings in Curitiba — a cylindrical structure of steel and glass set into a quarry in the Tingui park, surrounded by water and accessible via a covered footbridge. The name comes from the exposed steel wire framework of the roof and walls, which give the building a light, slightly industrial aesthetic at odds with the lush vegetation of the quarry around it.

The venue hosts opera, theatre, and concerts throughout the year. Even if you are not attending a performance, the building is worth visiting for its setting alone — the quarry walls rising behind it, the reflections in the water, and the contrast between the industrial materials and the green surroundings. Check the programme ahead — performances regularly sell out.

Location: Rua João Gava, Parque Tingui.

A story
The opera house was built in sixty-five days in 1992 — the city administration wanted to open it in time for a specific event and simply made it happen. The steel and glass structure, designed by architect Domingos Bongestabs, was prefabricated and assembled on site with remarkable speed. It still holds regular performances and has become one of the most distinctive concert venues in Brazil.
