Teatro Guaíra

The Teatro Guaíra is Paraná's main state theatre and one of the most important performing arts venues in southern Brazil. The building, completed in 1974, is a bold piece of Brazilian modernist architecture — all angles and concrete, with a dramatic entrance hall and two main performance spaces.

The theatre hosts opera, ballet, orchestral performances, and theatre year-round. The main auditorium, the Guairão, seats close to 2,000 people. Even if you do not attend a performance, the building's public areas are worth visiting during the day — the architecture is distinctive, and a short walk from the historic centre.

Location: Rua XV de Novembro, Centro.

A story
The Teatro Guaíra was the venue for the 1983 concert by the Rolling Stones — at the time one of the largest concerts ever held in South America. A plaque in the foyer commemorates the event. More remarkably, the theatre's main auditorium can seat nearly 2,000 people and is entirely without pillars, achieved through a cantilevered concrete structure that was considered a significant engineering achievement when built in the 1970s.
