Itapema's position on the central Santa Catarina coast makes it a good base. Balneário Camboriú is the high-rise resort just to the north — the closest thing southern Brazil has to a Copacabana skyline. Florianópolis is a longer hop south, where the island's beaches, the central lagoon, and the historic centre all reward a full day. Up the coast, Porto Belo runs boat trips out to Ilha de Porto Belo and the Reserva Biológica Marinha do Arvoredo offshore — a protected dive site with the clearest water on this stretch of coast.
