An hour from Santiago the Maipo comes out of the mountains fast enough to raft, and this is the cheapest serious way to spend a morning out of the city. Nine kilometres of Class III for CLP 30,000, or twelve kilometres of the harder water for CLP 45,000. They claim guides with up to seventeen years on Chilean rivers and hold the Sello de Calidad Turística.
Booking is a straightforward shop cart on the website, which is unusual and welcome — you pick a date and pay. If you have no car they will send one: CLP 200,000 for a private car from Santiago, CLP 380,000 for a van, which only makes sense split between a group. Otherwise the Metro to Las Mercedes and a colectivo up the canyon does it.
