Baluarte de Santo Domingo

Baluarte de Santo Domingo, the best section of city walls to walk

The Baluarte de Santo Domingo is the section of Cartagena's colonial walls that runs along the Caribbean side of the old city, between the Torre del Reloj and the Puerta del Mar. It's the most scenic stretch for walking — the views out over the water are unobstructed, the cannons are well-preserved, and the pavement along the top is wide enough to stroll comfortably. Café del Mar occupies part of this bastion, but you don't need to patronise it to enjoy the walls.

The bastion was central to the defense of the city against the 1741 British attack. The guns installed here could reach ships attempting to cross the outer bay. The section is particularly good in the early morning before the crowds arrive, and again at sunset.
