Getsemaní is the neighbourhood immediately outside Cartagena's walled city, connected to the old town by the Torre del Reloj gate. For much of the 20th century it was a working-class district with a reputation for danger; in the last fifteen years it has gentrified rapidly and is now Cartagena's most interesting neighbourhood for nightlife, street art, and independent restaurants and bars.
The streets are lined with colourful colonial houses and covered in murals — some of the best street art in Colombia is here. The Plaza de la Trinidad, Getsemaní's central square, fills with locals every evening in a spontaneous social scene that feels nothing like the more touristy old city nearby. Budget travellers tend to prefer Getsemaní for accommodation, as it has a better range of hostels and the vibe is more relaxed.
