The distinction here is real and not marketing: Wiwa Tours is an indigenous agency, set up in 2008 with the traditional authorities and the Wiwa and Kemakumake Kudzheshi foundations to bring the Sierra's tourism under the communities' own control. Around 90% of the staff are indigenous, and the guides on the Ciudad Perdida trail are Wiwa men walking ground their families live on.
In Dʉmʉna, wi is warm country and wa is people — the Wiwa are the people of the lower Sierra. You will meet Kogui and Wiwa settlements on the way up regardless of who you book with; the difference is whether the person explaining them is from one.
